ECWCS Outdoor Clothing System
71
ECWCS stands for "Extended Cold Weather Clothing System" and was developed by the U.S. Military to provide its soldiers with a clothing system to get them through any weather situation they might encounter in the field. From sand storms to blizzards this gear will take it all.
Why Layer?
The ECWCS Clothing System is a layering system designed to keep its wearer comfortable through a wide range of temperatures. Having multiple layers in stead of one heavy coat enables the wearer not only to tailor their clothing for their current surroundings (by adding or removing layers) but also shed layers depending on their physical activity to keep from sweating. One of the most dangerous situations in extreme cold is sweating through your clothing, once your clothes are wet it is almost impossible to regain that warmth.
The ECWCS system consists of four main parts:
ECWCS Silk Weight Base Layer
The ECWCS Silk Weight Top and Bottom is made of a moisture wicking polyester fabric designed to keep moisture away from your skin. Light and comfortable, this layer will protect you under your outer layers.
ECWCS Polypropylene Layer
The ECWCS Polypropylene Top and Bottom is the second layer of insulation that can be added for additional protection against the elements. It has a soft fleece lining for added comfort without being too bulky to fit under your other layers. It's elastic cuffs and neck zippers will keep the cold out.
ECWCS Polar Fleece Layer
The ECWCS Polar Fleece Jacket and ECWCS Polar Fleece Pants can be worn on their own in more mild conditions. Made of soft fleece, it is comfortable and warm. Reinforced shoulders and elbows patches for added durability and water resistance.
ECWCS HYVAT Outer Layer
Consisting of the ECWCS Parka and Pants made from HYVAT a special 3 layer fabric that provides windproof and waterproof insulation while still allowing the fabric to breath. This is the final outer layer for the ultimate layering system. Featuring the famous "Cobra Hood", non-freezing double pull zippers, underarm and back ventilation zippers and zippered legs this layer is comfortable and easy to get in and out of.
Why ECWCS over other Clothing?
For me it boils down to getting great clothing for an affordable price. As an avid outdoors man all my life I have spent thousands of dollars over the years on clothing and gear; the bottom line this is great outdoor clothing for the money.
Performance gear was getting so expensive I couldn't justify the cost anymore so I gave the ECWCS layering system a try. From my experience the ECWCS system will out perform many of the more expensive brands and leave you some cash left over to actually go out and see how tough this clothing really is.

Great info, will think of this for the next snow trip, if it's good enough for the army it will be more than enough for me
